Gregg Allman
Gregg Allman was born in Nashville, Tennessee but grew up in Daytona, Florida with his brother Duane. The brothers played in various bands, including “The Escorts” and “The Allman Joys”, finally getting a record deal in Los Angeles in 1967, as “The Hour Glass”. After two psychedelic blues albums that the band itself wasn't too fond of, they split up and Gregg made an attempt to launch his solo career in L.A.
Meanwhile, Gregg’s brother, Duane, had started a new band in Jacksonville, Florida, which Gregg would join in 1969. He became the band’s singer, also playing the Hammond organ. A band was formed that would be writing rock history: The Allman Brothers Band.
In 1973, almost two years after Duane Allman’s life was tragically ended in a motorbike accident, Gregg released his first solo album, “Laid Back”. From that point forward, he pursued a solo career parallel to The Allman Brothers Band.
From 1975 to 1979, Gregg Allman was married to the American singer and actress Cher. Their son, Elijah Blue Allman, followed his parents’ footsteps and became a musician. Gregg fathered three sons and two daughters with five separate women.
Gregg Allman’s private life and career were overshadowed by his addiction to drugs and alcohol until he agreed to go to rehab in the mid-90’s. Gregg was later diagnosed with hepatitis C and, while getting a liver transplant in 2010, caught pneumonia.
In 2016, his health deteriorated forcing him to cancel a whole series of concerts. Gregg Allman died of liver cancer at his home in Savannah, Georgia on the 27 May 2017 aged 69.
