The Grateful Dead boss Jerry Garcia was born in San Francisco as son of a nurse and the swing-musician José Ramon Garcia. His first guitar was a present for his 15th birthday. Af- ter finishing High School, College and Mili- tary Service he met the poet “Robert Hunter” in San Francisco. Together they wrote near- ly all of his solo songs and as well songs for the Folkrockband Grateful Dead. He founded this band in San Francisco in 1965, and since 1972 he was active as a solo artist too. He was in a very bad shape, due to drugs and dia- betes. In summer of 1995 Jerry entered a re- hab center, 50km north of San Francisco. He told his band members being on vacation in Hawaii with his wife. On august 10th, 1995 a nurse discovered his dead body at 04:23h. He died of a heart attack. On august 13th, a mass to his honor got celebrated at the Gol- den Gate Park by thousands of fans and even Bill Clinton joined. Bill Clinton called him an “American icon”. He has been elected as the 13th best guitarist of all times a few years ago. In 1987, still during his living years the Ame- rican ice cream brand “Ben& Jerry’s” created an ice cream and also “a low fat frozen Yo- gourt” with his name. The ice cream “Cherry Garcia” is a bestseller for “Ben & Jerry’s”.
